1854: First Halifax AGM
The Halifax held its first Annual General Meeting on 6th March 1854. Reviewing the Society's first year of business, the directors reported that it had far exceeded 'the expectations of the most sanguine ... originators and promoters'.
Since February 1853, membership of the Society had swelled to 584, with over £11,000 - more than half a million today - received through subscriptions and deposits. Some £9,000 had been issued in mortgages.
The Society was congratulated on its success, and praised as an 'example to the world'.
